Door handles aren't just an important for their aesthetic value to your home but they're also essential for security as they let you lock and unlock your door. As time passes the door handle could become loose or feel loose. It may also begin to look old and worn. This is an indication that it's time to replace it.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a serious issue as you will no longer be in a position to lock or unlock the door and put your family and yourself at risk.
Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be quite dangerous, especially if your children or elderly family members have difficulty opening it and end up trapped within. It's simple to fix a damaged handle on the door.
Modern door handles are usually standard sizes and should be able to fit any door. If you are not sure if your new door handle will work, take off the old one and measure its housing holes. This will let you purchase the right size door handle.
It is easiest to remove the door handle by unscrewing it from the door. Usually it is a matter of using a screwdriver. However, you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located on the edge trim piece. After removing the latch, unscrew the handle and the strike plate. Then, you can remove the latch from the edge of the door.
Remove the Strike Plate
You'll have to replace your latch plate when you replace the handle. It's the part that holds the hole where the door's latch hooks in when the door closes. The package the new handles arrive in will have two different latch plates: either a rectangular or a circular one (see the above diagram that outlines the parts of the door handle). If your current latch plate is a rectangular shape, switch it over to the circular one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a way that makes the handle more comfortable to operate.
The first step is to remove the screw that holds the latch plate in place. The screws can be very tight, and may require some force to loosen. If you are able, it could be beneficial to have a second person help with this process.
Once the screws are removed the latch will slide out of the door with ease. If it is stuck or doesn't move then use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This can help loosen the plate.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Utilizing the screws made of wood that were included with your new handles, screw the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, as this can damage the strike plate.
If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and then open the door to check whether it latches and closes correctly. If not then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate up or down or forward or back until the door shuts correctly.
If the door continues to move or jiggles, you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or the wrong size for the latch, or due to damaged or broken strike plate. If this is the situation then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Take off the Latch
The latch is a curved metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward and allows you to open the door. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep your door closed. If your door shakes when you close it, replacing the latch could be all you need to correct the issue.
The screws that support the door latch are hard to spot however, you can insert a screwdriver into an insignificant hole on the trim plate and then pry the latch off. After taking off the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch and the bolts that hold it and the spindle that holds it.
If the latch cannot be easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed slot of the latch and then gently twist or jiggle until you feel the handle and latch begin to break off. It may take this several times before the latch comes loose enough to let it out.
You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without any issues once you have removed the old one. Use the new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly positioned in the slot, aligned with the screw chambers.
Measure the existing backset (the distance between the centre of the large hole in the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle is equal to the measurement.
If you're replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged then you'll need a new one.
